Professor Walter Oechsler of the University of Mannheim
(Germany) believes the workplace and workforce in the 21st
century will be characterized by "flexibilization." Oechsler
sees the "flexibilization" of the workplace and workforce
leading to "a core group with unlimited full employment, and an
increasingly larger group of short-term limited and/or part-time
employees who face severe employment risks, ultimately resulting
in stress."
Unfortunately, I must agree with Oechsler's rather ...Read the rest of this entry »

As the competition for talented people picks up, forward
thinking managers need to assess how they are positioned to keep
their good people and attract some more.
Get the basics right People who have choices, and good
people normally do, look for certain features in their employer.
It continues to amaze us as we visit different businesses how
little attention is paid to some of the basics in the work
place.
Why would someone put up with poor pay, disinterested
management, run down physical ...Read the rest of this entry »

1st Fact: Interviewing applicants is the most common way
companies decide whom to hire.
2nd Fact: Research proves most interviewers do lousy at
predicting if an applicant will succeed - or flop - if hired.
3rd Fact: Research shows that customized pre-employment tests do
great at predicting if an applicant may succeed or fail
on-the-job.
4th Fact: Since you must interview applicants, even if you use
tests, you need to make better predictions based on interviews.
If you do not learn how to do ...Read the rest of this entry »

Poor managerial performance is viewed more as structural rather
than market factors. The mantra of the managements for
increasing efficiencies and profitability is more often than not
structural adjustments within the organization.
Structural adjustments at best produce short term results. Many
of the change initiatives fizzle out after the initial spurt in
productivity while management grapple with sagging morale and
bottom-line. Managements initiate more change for the sake of
keeping the ...Read the rest of this entry »

"We just don't work as a team!" Janet, a group manager for a
large insurance company, was complaining to Larry, her human
resources consultant. "Everyone just seems to do their own
thing, they don't share information, don't try to help each
other, and don't seem to care about anyone else's problems. What
we need is a team building offsite!" Janet and Larry decided to
put together a two-day offsite for the team at a resort about
two hours away from work. Janet wanted immediate focus on ...Read the rest of this entry »

Pull over; IT manager; your license and your reconciliation,
please. Huh? My what? Yep, the software police are at your door;
now what? You may ask, 'How did it get to this? We are an honest

Well, many companies have illegal or improperly licensed
software on corporate IT assets. According to the Business

The question often comes up, 'Isn't management coaching a lot
like the familiar performance appraisal process?' Our answer is
that the two are dramatically different. The CMOE team
originally became interested in the coaching process because of
our experiences with the deficiencies of performance appraisal.
We were asked to devise a customized performance appraisal
system, along with a training program, for a Fortune 500
corporation. After working through the resistance that ...Read the rest of this entry »

I see a PR firm has done a survey on the amount of time Canadian
CEOs spend on communication, and found they spend almost half of
their time on communication.
I think we're supposed to be impressed that CEOs spend that much
time on communication. But, quite frankly, what else does a CEO
do? And, if you consider both direct and indirect communication,
wouldn't that be more like 90%?
So, what do CEOs do, and how much of that involves communication
of one kind or another?
Well, they make ...Read the rest of this entry »

Management guru Tom Peters says white collar workers and
managers in functional departments need to protect their futures.
They have to learn "the difference between doing totally
acceptable work and creating very new value...." he notes, in an
Industry Week article. In other words, people in departments
like Human Resources and Finance need to become entrepreneurial.
With that in mind, let's look at three ways you can use
communication to add new value, whether you work in a ...Read the rest of this entry »

gift basket is a great way to make someone feel important. From

them know that their business matters, to rewarding your
